Installation

Once you have downloaded the complete product file or partial product files from the Download page, perform the following steps as root:

  1. Download the product tar files. Communicator 4.61 for UnixWare 7 systems is contained in the following files on the SCO download site:

      DL94920P000.html
The product's Getting Started guide (this document).
      DL94921P000.html
The product's Release and Installation Notes document.

      DL94922P000.tar
A tar-format file containing a complete product installable image.

      DL94923P000.tar
      DL94924P000.tar
      DL94927P000.tar
Tar-format files containing partial product images.

You have the option to download a single large file or multiple smaller files depending on the speed of your Internet connection.
  2. Move the files to a preferred installation directory, for example:
    mv filename*.tar /tmp1
  3. Change to the installation directory:
    cd /tmp1
  4. Extract the files. This command must be performed on each file individually.
    tar xvf <filename>.tar

NOTE: If you downloaded partial product tar files, combine the package pieces into one file:

    cat nscomm1 nscomm2 nscomm3 > NScomm4.pkg

  5. Use pkgadd or the SCOadmin Application Installer to install the Netscape Communicator software and documentation:

    • If you are using pkgadd, while in the installation directory used above, enter:
      pkgadd -d `pwd`/NScomm4.pkg
    • If you are using the SCOadmin Application Installer:

      1. Click on the Application Installer in the SCOadmin Software_Management folder.
      2. In the Install From menu, choose Other.
      3. In the Folder box, type the full pathname of the .pkg file, including the filename (for example, /tmp1/NScomm4.pkg).
      4. Press <Enter> or click on the Update View button.
      5. Click on the icon that appears, and then click on the Install button.
NOTE:You cannot have both Netscape Navigator Gold TM and Netscape Communicator installed on your system simultaneously. If you are installing Netscape Communicator 4.61 on UnixWare 7 Release 7.1 or higher, any existing versions of Navigator Gold will be removed automatically. If you are installing Communicator on Release 7.0.0 or Release 7.0.1, you must manually remove the previous version of Netscape Navigator Gold, including the documentation package, before you can install Netscape Communicator.

  6. When you you have completed the installation, you will probably want to remove the download packages from the /tmp1 directory, as they are rather large.

SCO Strong Encryption Supplement

Customers in the United States and Canada are allowed to use strong encryption with the Netscape products. All the Netscape client and server products use 40-bit encryption by default when using the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol to communicate secured information. Strong encryption allows the use of 128-bit encryption between clients and servers.

The SCO Strong Encryption Supplement (included with the UnixWare 7 media kit) must be installed to enable strong encryption for all Netscape products. Installation of the Strong Encryption Supplement prompts for a license, which can be purchased by calling 1-800-SCO-UNIX.

NOTE: The license can be used on all systems at your site.

Licensing

The Netscape Communicator 4.61 browser is free. No separate license is required unless you use strong encryption.
