Getting Started

SCO Merge^(TM) brings support for Windows and DOS applications on the UnixWare^® system. Windows 95, Windows 3.1, and DOS applications run simultaneously with business-critical UNIX applications. A common filesystem allows Windows, DOS, and UNIX System users to share data. Windows, DOS, and UNIX System users simultaneously share printers and other standard PC peripherals.

Software: UnixWare 7 Release 7.0.1
RAM: 32MB minimum; 64MB recommended
Disk Space:

• 15MB free disk space for Merge 4.1.1
• 60MB free disk space per Windows 95 installation
• additional disk space for applications

Before beginning the installation, review the SCO Merge Release and Installation Notes, which contain known limitations and other important information. In particular, if you are upgrading, be sure to follow the instructions for removing the previous release of Merge prior to installing Merge 4.1.1.

Depending on the speed and reliability of your Internet connection, you can either download the SCO Merge product as a complete tar file or as partial tar files.

• To download a complete tar file:


1. Select the complete product (C0*.tar) file from the SCO Merge Download page.



2. As root, move the file to a preferred installation directory:



mv C0*.tar /tmp1

3. Change to the installation directory:



cd /tmp1

4. Extract the installation package files from the tar file:



tar xvf C0*.tar

• To download partial tar files:


1. Download all of the partial product (P*.tar) files from the SCO Merge Download page.



2. As root, move the files to a preferred installation directory:



mv P*.tar /tmp1

3. Change to the installation directory:



cd /tmp1

4. Extract the contents of the tar files. You must run the following command on each of the partial product files:



tar xvf <filename>.tar

5. The above command should have created the files merge1 and merge2. Concatenate the resulting files to produce a single installation package file:



cat merge1 merge2 > Merge411.pkg

NOTE: The Release and Installation Notes are extremely important and must be read before attempting to upgrade or install SCO Merge.

Once you have extracted the package file from the downloaded tar file(s), install the Merge software and documentation using pkgadd(1M) or the Application Installer from the SCOadmin Software_Management folder.

• If you are using pkgadd, while in the installation directory used above, enter:



pkgadd -d `pwd`/Merge411.pkg

• If you are using the Application Installer:
1. In the Install From menu, select Other.
2. In the Folder box, type the full pathname of the package file (for example, /tmp1/Merge411.pkg).
3. Press <Enter> or click on the Update View button.
4. Click on the merge icon that appears, then click on the Install button.

During installation, you are prompted for a license. If you do not have a permanent license, refer to the release notes for a 60-day evaluation license.

Please remember that the evaluation licenses are valid for 60 (sixty) days from the date of installation of the particular product. Should you wish to use the product beyond the 60-day period, please purchase a permanent Certificate of License and Authenticity (COLA) from your SCO Authorized Reseller, and install that license with the License Manager.

Evaluation license numbers cannot be reused; removing a product installed with a particular license number and attempting to use that number for the installation of another product will not be successful.

Do not attempt to remove the evaluation license with the License Manager after it is installed. Doing so will cause that license to be invalid should it be used in a subsequent installation.
