SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V Hardware Support

SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V runs as a Virtual Machine on top of a supported VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V platform and does not impose any dependencies on the server platform. Please contact VMware or Microsoft for their platforms specific hardware requirements and certified hardware listings.

SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V Licenses

The SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V License is a contract that grants you rights to use the SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V software for a limited period of time. An SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V license is required for each instance of SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V running on a Virtual Host.

SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V licenses are Subscription Licenses. This means that they are only valid for, and will expire at the end of the License period. At the end of the License period you will need to renew your license and register it if you want to continue to use the product.

Typically, you obtain SCO OpenServer product licenses from your SCO OpenServer software provider. You can locate an SCO OpenServer software provider using the SCO Distributor Locator at:

http://www.sco.com/partners/dist/

If you need help locating an SCO Partner or have any questions relating to the purchasing of licenses you can contact SCO directly by choosing the “Sales” category on the feedback form at:

http://www.sco.com/company/feedback/index.html

The end user license agreement (EULA) of SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V for VMware is displayed when importing the Virtual Appliance and is also available to view:

  • on the downloadable ISO images in the directory /info/license
  • on the DVD media in the directory /info/license
  • on an already installed system in the directory /etc/license

We recommend you use WordPad when viewing text files on the ISO Image or CD/DVD Media on Microsoft Windows systems.

Before installing the SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V Upgrade Supplement

Before you install the SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V Upgrade Supplement you will need to:

  • Ensure that the system you are upgrading meets the Upgrade Supplement Requirements
  • Take a backup or snapshot of the SCO OpenServer system you are about to upgrade

Please note that:

  • The Supplement, when installed will use about 40Mb of space on the root filesystem
  • Removal of the Upgrade Supplement is not supported

Issues to consider if you are upgrading from SCO OpenServer 5.0.7

If you are upgrading from SCO OpenServer 5.0.7 (as opposed to OpenServer 5.0.7V) then you will need to also take note of the following:

  • If you install the Upgrade Supplement you are moving from a perpetual license model to a subscription model. Subscription licenses are only valid for, and will expire at the end of the License period. At the end of the License period you will need to renew your license and register it if you want to continue to use the product.
  • As part of the Upgrade process your Virtual Machine will be licensed with a 7 Evaluation day license (1SOSR507V). You will need to license your server with a valid SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V Cross Grade license if you wish to use the Virtual Machine beyond the Evaluation period.
  • The SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V Cross Grade license should ONLY be applied to your system once the Upgrade Supplement has been applied to your Virtual Machine.
  • SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V does not support the BusLogic  (blc) device driver.  blc does not handle VMware's use of SCSI Busy.  As a result data corruption may occur.  To prevent data corruption the Upgrade Supplement will switch your blc HBA controlled devices to the LSI Logic (lsil) device driver. You will need to change the SCSI Controller Type to LSI Logic once the Upgrade Supplement has been applied. For details on how to edit your Virtual Machine settings to set the SCSI Controller Type to LSI Logic click here.
  • SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V Version 2.0.0 has introduced support for SCO Symmetrical Multiprocessing (SMP) on VMware vSphere 4.x and VMware ESXi 4.x platforms. Customers wishing to take advantage of this new feature must install the SCO Symmetrical Multiprocessing product before they install the Upgrade Supplement. For details on how to install the SCO SMP click here.

Issues to consider if you are upgrading from SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V Version 1.0.0 for VMware

If you are upgrading from SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V Version 1.0.0 for VMware then you will need to also take note of the following:

  • SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V Version 2.0.0 has introduced support for SCO Symmetrical Multiprocessing (SMP) on VMware vSphere 4.x and VMware ESXi 4.x platforms. Customers wishing to take advantage of this new feature must install the SCO Symmetrical Multiprocessing product before they install the Upgrade Supplement. For details on how to install the SCO SMP click here.

SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V Upgrade Supplement Installation Requirements

SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V Upgrade Supplement can be installed on:

  • An SCO OpenServer 5.0.7 Virtual Machine with Maintenance Pack 5 applied running on a supported VMware platform

Post Upgrade tasks when upgrading from SCO OpenServer 5.0.7 MP5

If you have installed the Upgrade Supplement on SCO OpenServer 5.0.7 Virtual Machine with Maintenance Pack 5 applied then you may now wish to:

  • Add additional Virtual Processors to your Virtual Machine
  • Change the SCSI Controller Type of your Virtual Machine from BusLogic to LSI Logic
  • License your server with your SCO OpenServer 5.0.7 to OpenServer 5.0.7V Cross grade license
  • Register your SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V system
  • Take a snapshot of your newly upgraded Virtual Machine

Adding Virtual Processors to your Virtual Machine

If you have installed SCO SMP on your Virtual Machine as part of the Upgrade process then you may wish to add additional Virtual Processors to your Virtual Machine at this point. To add additional Virtual Processors do the following:

1.      Shutdown and Power Off the newly upgraded Virtual Machine

2.      From a Windows PC launch the VMware Infrastructure/vSphere Client or VirtualCenter/vCenter

3.      Login to the Infrastructure/vSphere Client or VirtualCenter/vCenter

4.      Right click on the Virtual Machine you wish to add Virtual Processors to

5.      Select Edit Settings… from the menu

6.      In the Virtual Machine Properties window select CPUs

7.      Choose the Number of virtual processors you want to use with your Virtual Machine

8.      Click on OK

Changing the SCSI Controller Type from BusLogic to LSI Logic

OpenServer 5.0.7V does not support the BusLogic  (blc) device driver.  blc does not handle VMware's use of SCSI Busy.  As a result data corruption may occur.  To prevent data corruption the Upgrade Supplement will switch your blc HBA controlled devices to the LSI Logic (lsil) device driver. If you installed you VM originally with the BusLogic SCSI Controller then you will need to change the SCSI Controller Type to LSI Logic once the Upgrade Supplement has been applied.

To change the SCSI Controller Type to LSI Logic do the following:

  1. Shutdown and Power Off the newly upgraded Virtual Machine
  2. From a Windows PC launch the VMware Infrastructure/vSphere Client or VirtualCenter/vCenter

Registering your SCO OpenServer 5.0.7V Virtual Machine

If you are upgrading from SCO OpenServer 5.0.7 to OpenServer 5.0.7V then you must register your server. If you do not register your product within 14 days of licensing it then system services will be restricted.

Registering a product is a three-part process:

·        Use the License Manager to get the information you need to register.

·        Visit the SCO OpenServer Registration web page to obtain a Registration Key:
